Mechanical Systems
Noise and vibration produced by building mechanical systems can transmit to occupied
spaces by several means. Common sources include room terminals of ducted ventilation
systems that emit noise propagated from fans and variable airflow devices. Other
sources include ducts over occupied spaces that transmit noise through duct walls
and through ceiling plenums. Noise can transmit from mechanical rooms and rooftop
installations to occupied spaces through airborne and structure born paths.
Mechanical systems noise evaluation services include:
- Reviews of mechanical design plans for existing and planned spaces
- Surveys of noise in occupied spaces emitted by ventilation ducts and mechanical spaces
- Reviews of published manufacturer noise ratings for fan systems and rated sound attenuation
for ducts, silencers, and other elements
- Reviews of interior noise level acceptability criteria contained in building design
guidelines and other design references
- Development of computerized models to:
- Evaluate ductborne noise propagation and duct breakout noise levels from ventilation
systems
- Evaluate airborne noise levels transmitted from mechanical rooms
- Assess combined mechanical noise levels in occupied spaces in comparison to criteria,
and
- Investigate mechanical system improvements to reduce interior noise levels
- Follow-up surveys of noise after mitigations have been implemented and after facilities
are constructed
